CIFNET - About Us (Profile)

CIFNET is the only national institute of its kind in the country to meet the training requirements of technical and certificated personnel such as Skippers, Mates, Engineers, Engine Drivers of power fishing vessels as stipulated in the M.S. (Amendment) Act. 1987. CIFNET is also responsible for developing the required technical manpower for the supporting shore establishments and for the effective operation of fishing vessels.

The key objectives of the Institute are:

To create technical manpower for the operation of Ocean going fishing vessels, infrastructural establishments and Fishermen training centres.
To conduct studies on fishing craft, fishing gears and equipments in Fishing Technology.
To help developing nations in the South-east Asian, Middle east and African regions to create technical manpower for development of Marine Fisheries.
To provide technical consultancy service in all matters with special reference to technical manpower requirements.

The Institute at present is conducting two Regular courses viz. Mate Fishing Vessel Course & Engine Driver Fishing Vessel Course of 18 months duration each. The candidates after passing these courses are to obtain requisite sea service for appearing the respective competency examination in the Deck and Engine side conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department, Directorate of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Govt. of India. In addition, the Institute also conduct Shore Mechanics Course of 12 months duration for the benefit of personnel who are handling the shore establishments of the Fisheries Organisations. Short term courses on the Nautical, Fisheries and Engineering disciplines exclusively for the trainers, Managers of fishing industry, Fishery Organisations, Personnel of Financial Institutions etc. are also conducted according to the need, most of which are tailor made.

Apart from these courses the Institute also arrange Special training programmes for Foreign Nationals from countries like Nigeria, Zambia, Tanzania, Ghana, PDR Yemen, Myanmar, Laos, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Maldives, Philippines etc. under various schemes like FAO Fellowship, CFTC, SCAAP, ESCAP, ITEC, Colombo Plan etc. Thus over the years the Institute come out as a nodal Institution in the South-east Asia for training the personnel of the fishing fleet and offering a Special training in Nautical, Fisheries and Engineering disciplines.
