Under the technical co-operation programme CIFNET and FAO conducted a special programme on the introduction of Ferro-cement as an alternative construction material for fishing vessel. The programme was conducted by building ferro-cement vessels in CIFNET. Six such vessels were constructed under this programme. They had special fuel saving devices like kurt nozzles and innovative deck layouts. These vessels were conducted trial fishing which were highly encouraging. They were later handed over to various fisheries corporations fro further operations.
A programme for Energy Conservation in the Indian fishing fleet specially undertaken by CIFNET during 1988 under bilateral agreement signed between Govt. of India and Govt. of Norway. On the Norwegian side MARINTEK was the consultant. The programme was extended for two years 1990-92. A total of 207 trawlers, gill-netters, purse seiners were experimented in the Kerala and Karnataka coasts for the project. Technical tests on these vessels for hydrodynamic properties, characteristics of propulsion machinery were examined for improved fuel efficiency. The project phase included following individual projects.
The findings showed that there were good potential in the Indian fishing fleet to save fuel by introducing economic operational measures on the above factors.
